A Selection of Fun Words


I like words. I like reading them, writing them, speaking them, and learning new ones. So here is a post dedicated to fun words.

Defenestrate (verb)- to throw (someone) out of a window
ex. If you don't be quiet I will defenestrate you!
Fun Facts: It was first used in 1619! Also when I taught this word to my cousin and the girl she didn't like they proceeded to threaten to defenestrate each other every day for a week.

Rame (noun)- something that is both chaotic and joyful at the same time
ex. My cat is rame
Fun Fact: The e has an accent over it but I don't know how to do that with my keyboard

Kalon (noun)- Beauty that is more than skin-deep
pronounced (kA-lon)
ex. She has a kalon
Fun Fact: I'm not sure all these words are English. I know Defenestrate is!

Mamihlapinatapai (noun)- a look shared by two people, each wishing that the other would initiate something they both desire but which neither wants to begin.
ex. They gave each other a mamihlapinatapai and wished the other would start the robbery
Fun Fact: I have no clue what language this is from. I'm just going everywhere I guess

Alexithymia (noun)- difficulty in experiencing, expressing, and describing emotional responses
ex. He had alexithymia
Fun Fact: Real people have this, if you know someone with this support them

Pleonasm (noun)- the use of more words than necessary to convey meaning
ex. Her sentence had a lot of pleonasm
Fun Fact: This word was first used in 1610!

Whelve (verb)- to bury something deep; to hide
ex. She whelved the body
Fun Fact: I swear i'm not a murderer this is just the sentence that occurred to me.

Dysania (noun)- the state of finding it hard to get out of bed in the morning
ex. He had an overwhelming feeling of dysania
Fun Fact: Not to be confused with the water bottle brand Dasani

Atelophobia (noun)- the fear of imperfection or not being good enough; an extreme fear of failing to achieve perfection in any of one's actions, ideas, or beliefs
ex. He had atelophobia
Fun Fact: I think I'll make another word post about phobia's sometime.

Charientism (noun)- an artfully veiled insult
ex. Not a master of charientism are you?
Fun Fact: If you say that example sentence to someone they will need water for that burn

Selenophile (noun)- someone who loves the moon
ex. Maybe she was a selenophile, maybe she was a werewolf, who knew right?
Fun Fact: The suffix phile means to specify an attraction or affinity to something

Abditory (noun)- a place in which you can disappear; a hiding place
ex. The tree house was his abditory from a broken family
Fun Fact: I am concerned about myself after that depressing example sentence

Eesome (adjective)- pleasing to the eye
ex. Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vince is very eesome
Fun Fact: I'm learning a lot of these words just now

Lethologica (noun)- when you think of something but the word for it escapes you
ex. You know those scooter things in elementary school? The ones in gym? Ugh i'm having a lethologica moment right now
Fun Fact: Using most if not all of these words casually will make you sound pretentious

Pretentious (adjective)- expressive of affected, unwarranted, or exaggerated importance, worth, or stature
ex. When she spoke she used big words to sound pretentious
Fun Fact: My space key makes a quiet squeaky toy/duck noise whenever I use it

Athazagoraphobia (noun)- the fear of forgetting, being forgotten or ignored, or being replaced
ex. He had athazagoraphobia and was nervous around his grandmother who had Alzheimers
Not-So-Fun Fact: Alzheimer's is a terrible thing to watch someone go through, I know personally

Sophrosyne (noun)- a healthy state of mind, characterized by self-control, moderation, and a deep awareness of one's true self, and resulting in true happiness
ex. I do not have sophrosyne
Fun Fact: The sentence shown above is true!

Zemblanity (noun)- the inevitable discovery of what we would rather not know; the opposite of serendipity
ex. When Loki found out he was adopted it was a zemblanity
Fun Fact: There are not enough words that start with a 'Z'

Serendipity (noun)- the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way
ex. The only word to describe how they met was serendipity
Fun Fact: The movie Forget Paris is not serendipity but has a happy ending

That is all for now i'm afraid. I've made four blog posts on my first day and now it's almost midnight so I should really eat dinner and go to bed. More words to come!
